Cold Mounting

Cold mounting provides protection and support of the sample surface, makes it easier to handle the sample, allows for several small samples in one mount and gives uniform sizes for clamping in a sample holder. Cold mounting resins cure through a chemical reaction. Akasel have carefully selected resins from the two prevailing systems used in metallography to offer you state-of-the-art solutions.

Type of Cold Mounting:
  • Epoxy Resins (Quick Type)
  • Epoxy Resins (Standard Type)
  • Acrylic Resins

Epoxy Mounting Resins

Epoxy provides the best adhesion to the sample, resulting in optimal edge retention and the best possible mount quality. It can also be used for vacuum impregnation or infiltration of fragile and porous samples. When cold mounting for metallography, each hardener provides different advantages. The lower the temperature the lower the shrinkage, therefore this is the preferred solution for no shrinkage and best edge retention.

Caution for Epoxy Resin

  • Resin and Hardner are Liquid Type
  • Do not storage with Mixed (Chemical Reaction)
  • Keep regulated mix rate (effect on hardening and property by mix rate
  • When mix liquid, try not to make air bubble and mix about 1 min.
  • Keep horizontality when use Mounting Clip

Acrylic Mounting Resin

Acrylic resin is a fast curing, transparent cold mounting system with a slightly yellowish tint. Due to complete visibility without having to use a pressure pot, it is ideal for failure analysis and in the preparation of electronic components like printed circuit boards, where you need to monitor the sample during preparation.

Caution for Acrylic Resin

  • Resin is Powder Type, Hardner is Liquid Type
  • Do not storage with Mixed (Chemical Reaction)
  • Keep regulated mix rate (effect on hardening and property by mix rate)
  • When mix liquid, try not to make air bubble and mix about 1 min.
  • Keep horizontality when use Mounting Clip

Common size of Mold

  • Plastic Mold : 25, 32, 38mm dia
  • Rubber Mold : 25, 32, 38, 50, 70mm dia
  • Recommend spread Release Agent inside of Mold before Cold Mounting
  • Recommend Rubber Mold for Re-use and simple emission

Cold Mounting Process

  1. Put specimen on exact point inside of Mold before pour Mixed resin.
  2. Need to check Mix rate of Resin and Hardener for good result of Cold Mounting.
  3. Mix Resin and Hardener slowly to prevent bubble.
  4. Resin and Hardener should be mix enough.
