IMM (Image Measuring Machine) v.s VMM (Video Measuring Machine), which one better?

As we known in the common market, non-contact measurement instrument can be either Profile Projector, Measuring Scope or Video Measuring Machine (VMM).

How about IMM?  Let’s find out!

IMM is the abbreviation for Image Measurement Machine. This machine uses image processing technology to perform automatic measurements that are both fast and highly accurate. As factory automation at manufacturing sites has steadily progressed, so has the rapid development of these measuring instruments.

IMM not only provides high accurate measurements but also have ability to check defective parts on manufacturing lines.

These machines use high pixel resolution cameras to enable the observation of color images and to capture high quality of view. Meanwhile, the evolution of the associated software has made it possible to perform varied edge detections and to support complicated calculations with advance quality performance.

In recent years, there is also an increase in demand for IMM. Especially those manufacturers who are desired for high return of cost and productivity. On the other hand, VMM will be their prior consideration.

Let’s share some key differences between VMM & IMM and how they can benefit for your measurement application and demand result.

For OPTICAL measurement instruments like VMM & IMM, Lens Technology and Magnification has always played an important role. With these devices, operators can enjoy a high quality of image capturing and high precision measurement.

Lens Technology & Magnification

Models for VMM are normally using High Resolution Parallel Zoom Lens. Example: Optical Lens: 0.7X – 4.5X, FOV: 10.6 – 1.6mm

Some models for IMM are generally designed with Double Telecentric Lens. There are few size of Lens with different magnification range and FOV as following:

  • Lens 100mm (Mag 2X) for Large (Wide), FOV 100 x 100mm
  • Lens 20mm (Mag 6X) for High Precision, FOV 20 x 20mm
  • Lens 6mm (Mag 20X) for High Precision, FOV 6 x 6mm (For customers who desire for high accuracy with +/- 2um).

Telecentric Lens is the characteristic of certain multi-element lenses and is defined by its ability to keep the chief rays parallel to the optical axis in either object and/or image space. With this lens throughout the magnification ranges enable to make the measurements much more accurate, even when the sample being measured is around the periphery. Telecentric lenses are also useful when constructing 3D images and when stacking multiple out-of-focus areas into a single, in-focus image.

Measurement Time & Operations

Operators may stress up when their boss is rushing them for the measurement results. Hence, time consumption on sample preparation and step of programming for measurement is always the main concern.

VMM is required step by step program set up before proceed to the measurement program but IMM is not. Usually Jig & Fixture are required for VMM, this is to make sure the accurate calculation with automatic recognition of position & orientation for the workpiece but IMM is free orientation as it has the feature of auto alignment detection.

Example: VMM is required to do the alignment step before we run the measurement program. For IMM, you just need to called out the set program and place the sample on the machine platform with one click button then the result will pop out within seconds.

If you are always desire for high R.O.I and productivity then IMM will be your first choice. Different type of Optical Measurement Machine has their own advantage.

With tip of advice, No best machine but right machine! It’s better to choose a suitable machine based on measurement application requirement or even the budget tolerance.

Above sharing just for yourreference. When you’re interested in investing a VMM or IMM to improve your quality process, select a supplier who offer a quality service and meet your specific needs.
